Oggi post “tecnico”, in bilingue perché penso che possa far risparmiare un sacco di tempo a molte persone.

Come ho scritto nel mio precedente post, ho acquistato un hard disk SSD Crucial M4 da 256GB per il mio MacBook Pro 2011 da 17 pollici. Nell’installarlo sono incappato in diversi problemi, tutti riconducibili a origini differenti.

Il peggiore di essi, però, era un freeze del sistema operativo Mac OS X. Con frequenza piuttosto casuale, il sistema operativo si bloccava per una decina di secondi, con relativa rotellina colorata. Il problema, palesemente riconducibile al nuovo disco fisso, risultava piuttosto fastisioso, in particolare se si pensa alla spesa sostenuta per acquistarlo (circa 350 euro).

Vari forum consigliavano molte possibili soluzioni: attivare/disattivare il TRIM del hard disk, disabilitare la sospensione del disco, addirittura installare uno script che tenesse “occupato” l’SSD in modo che non avesse il tempo di freezare (questa soluzione, ammetto, non l’ho provata perché mi spaventava, anche se lo sviluppatore sosteneva funzionasse). Ovviamente nessuno di essi era la soluzione definitiva, in particolare le prime.

La vera svolta è stata quella di visitare il sito del produttore, dove molti utenti avevano segnalato il problema: nella sezione “Download” è infatti disponibile l’aggiornamento del firmware del disco. La versione 0002, come sostiene il produttore stesso, serve proprio a correggere questo problema. Ecco il changelog.

In questa pagina trovate i link per scaricare questi file. Si tratta di ISO da masterizzare su un CD (possibilmente riscrivibile, visto che servirà una volta sola) da eseguire all’avvio del computer. Funziona indifferente su PC e Mac e prevede solamente una conferma con “yes” quando viene richiesto. A tutto il resto pensa il programmino.

As I wrote in my previous post (in italian), I recently bougth an SSD Crucial M4 256GB hard disk for my 17-inch MacBook Pro. I had some problems during its setup, but one of them was particularly annoying: a freeze of the Mac OS X operating system. With an apparently random frequency, the operating system freezes for some seconds, with the coloured spin.

Forums suggest a lot of solutions: activating/deactivating TRIM property of the hard disk, disabling the energy saving option for the disk, or installing a tool that keep the disk busy so that it hasn’t enough time to freeze (I admit I didn’t try that exotic solution, although the developer says it works). However none of them is a real solution to the problem.

Luckily I surfed to the Crucial website, where there was the solution: in the download section there is a firmware update for the disk. Version 0002 is able to solve the problem. Here the changelog.

In this page you can find links to download the files.They are ISO files to be burned on a CD (maybe rewriteable, as you have to use it once). Boot the computer with it in the CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions. You only have to type “yes” when requested: the program will deal with the rest.
